Maxey: Bootlickers
By Ram Maxey

"As for former DepEd boss Florencio Abad, I don't think this country will miss him. He is the same genius who only lately said that the poor quality of public education can be improved by adding two years to the elementary and high school cycle."

THE 10 Cabinet members who had planned to quit their posts en masse, but who were instead pre-empted by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA) when she asked them to tender their courtesy resignations, had tried to appear 'holier-than-thou' with their defection by saying that the President had lost her moral ascendancy to rule and they had lost all desire to be a part of he administration.

Nonsense. They just wanted to be part of the "new" administration, the one that would replace PGMA's. Thinking that there were signs on the wall that the Arroyo government was on its way out and Vice President Noli de Castro would succeed her, they opted to jump what they thought was a sinking ship.

No wonder defectors, finance head Cesar Purisima, and DepEd chief Florencio Abad flew to Hong Kong last week to inform VP Noli de Castro about their defection along with eight other Cabinet secretaries. The bootlickers probably believed that their defection was an act of patriotism while hoping at the same time that De Castro would reward their patriotism by re-appointing them to the Cabinet should the Vice President take over from PGMA.

In this country we call their ilk SSBs.

Too bad for them, De Castro has other plans. One of which is to stick to Ate Glo (until further notice), while heaving a sigh of relief he remains the country's Number 2 instead of Number 1 and having to worry how to go about saving the economy or balancing the national budget, being invited to address the United Nations General Assembly (Dios ko dong, what will he tell them?), suppressing the 30-year communist rebellion, addressing the Moro problem, attending meetings with heads of state, etc.

As for former DepEd boss Florencio Abad, I don't think this country will miss him. He is the same genius who only lately said that the poor quality of public education could be improved by adding two years to the elementary and high school cycle. He forgot that you don't give quality education to students cramped 50, 60 to a classroom under the tutelage of poor quality teachers. No wonder the balding ex-secretary lost his hair worrying about the quality of education in this country. He did not have the right answers. Last we heard, he was still scratching his barren pate.
