Davao seaweed production up 71% By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) 11 has reported an increase of 70.9 percent in Davao Region's seaweed production during the first quarter of this year, from 227 metric tons in 2004 to 389 metric tons in 2005.
Bfar 11 planning division officer-in-charge Evelyn Basco attributed the growth to the agency's various initiatives, such as the establishment of 33 test plants and nurseries throughout the region.
"Sa test plants natin, we put up those sa mga areas na hindi talaga usually tinataniman ng seaweeds. So, those are areas aside from Mati, Sta. Cruz, Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos), and other provinces na along the coastline. Aside from the establishment of test plants and nurseries, we also provide the seaweed growers with dryers kasi mas mahal ang dry seaweeds. Therefore, mas malaki ang kikitain nila," she said.
As per data of the agency, dry seaweeds are being sold at P34 per kilogram at present while the wet ones are at less than P10 per kilogram.
The agency is envisioning to surpass last year's production volume of 1,146 metric tons by at least 10 percent this year.
