City's hotel occupancy up 8% as of May

DAVAO City posted an increase of 7.9 percent in hotel occupancy as of May this year, from 212,373 last year to 230,568 this year, the Department of Tourism (DOT) 11 reported.

The biggest influx of tourists, both domestic and foreign, was noted during the month of April, which reaped a total of 50,489.

Meanwhile, of the 230,568 tourists, 204,463 or 88.68 percent were domestic visitors, the bulk of whom were overseas Filipino workers, while only 24,315 or 10.56 percent accounted for foreign tourists.

Of the figure, 10,175 were from East Asian countries such as China, HongKong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, the major tourism markets, which have always been dominating the hotel occupancy chart of the country for years now.

DOT 11 regional director Sonia Garcia said in a recent interview that this momentum is expected to become even more dynamic especially that the region is tapping the South Phoenix Airways and Air Asia to establish direct flights from the city to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia.

Davao Tourism Association (Data) president Art Boncato, on the other hand, said the number of conventions that were held here since January is a big factor in boosting the city's hotel occupancy rates.

As per report of Data, the city has a total of 2,800 hotel rooms. (JMM)
