Visayan entry tops Davao music festival
IT WAS an afternoon fit for songwriters of every musical genre, but the folksy Tagadiin Ka Day, a dark horse, rode triumphantly into the sunset, as the only Visayan-composed entry wins in the first Davao Music Festival.
Patrick Seras, an instructor and recording studio owner, charmed the audience, bagging the top prize of 100,000.
The searing love song With You won second prize for Rebel Magdagasang and interpreted by Ann Quitoriano, Star of Davao's 2004 Grand winner, who also won as Best Interpreter.
Roseller Lagnayo Jr.'s Only, a soulful R&B and hip hop, shares his third prize with three co-interpreters.
Other finalists who comprised the magic ten were: Because of You--Jun Dabalos; I've Found My Heart in You--Geofrey Ginete; Where There is Love--Ma. Amor Bacharpa; In Your Time--Jeremy Sarmiento; Move on--Christopher Sulit; The Prize of Sacrifice--Marstephen Gerard Bajao and Everyday by Chris Givenchi Edejer.
This year's winners got the nod of Metro Pop Grand Prize winner Gary Granada, producer-songwriter Cynthia Alexander and Davao's "Dr. Love," Rico Dayoc of Love
Radio 90.7. Granada, speaking on behalf of the judges, commented that "lahat ng mga sumali ay magagaling."
The first Davao Music Festival was made possible through the support of San Miguel Corporation, Unilever, Procter and Gamble, Monde Nissin, Sunpride Foods, Century Canning Corporation, Alaska Milk Corporation, Colgate Palmolive Philippines, and Zesto Corporation; also sponsored by NCCC Department Store, Hype, Greenwich, Jollibee, Chowking, Goldilocks, Nature's Spring, Viva Mineral Water, Makiboy and NCCC Mall Davao.
NCCC Supermarket president Javey A. Lim expressed hopes that this contest will inspire more songwriters to "go out and pen their compositions for the listening public. This is an opportunity to promote and create a supportive circle for our local talents."
