Live animal encounter By Jojie Alcanatar Witerary
KIDS flocked to the SM Entertainment Plaza with wide-eyed excitement and wonder at the wonderful treats on display before their very eyes.
The Philippine Eagle Foundation and SM City Mall Davao sponsored a two-day event aptly titled LIVE ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS, and sure enough, animals were showcased perched on posts or tucked in cages.
Student from nursery up to high school were scheduled to come in groups to watch a video presentation about the Philippine Eagle, before chaperones (composed of parents and teachers) and the guides allowed the kids to touch the animals, and most particularly three pythons of varying sizes, namely Zap (largest), Mawie (medium), and Mimo (smallest).
The impressive lineup of birds were the White-Bellied Sea Eagle, Giant Slops Owl and the smaller Philippine Slops Owl, the Brahminy Kite, Philippine Hawk Eagle and the Barred Honey Buzzard.
Apart from Rein Navarro and staff who works at the foundation, most of the guides were volunteers, which included me, who opted to teach the young kids a lesson in drawing a cartoon eagle.
All seated on a floor mat, the result was fun and exhausting, as every tot insisted in showing me the best crude sketches.
Crayons and papers were scattered everywhere. But the best memorabilia were the doodles posted on the whiteboard... their colorful versions of the Philippine eagle, wide-eyed and crookedly happy.
The Live Animal Encounter will be brought to San Pedro College on August 8 to 10 for their Golden Jubilee Celebration, and in F. Bangoy National High School on August 1 to 3.
