'Bomb' text message of lawyer stirs cops

IN THIS era of suicide bombings and other kinds of attacks that can blow everyone and his uncle to kingdom come, one should be extra careful about sending even text messages.

This was the lesson learned by a prominent Davao lawyer who sent an innocent text message to fellow members of the "Bomberos de Davao," an athletic group of Dabawenyos usually competing in friendly inter-city tournaments in golf, basketball and other sports events for a long time now.

The lawyer, whose identity we will hide under the initial "N", sent this text message to fellow Bomberos:

"We BOMB Iloilo Sep 9 to 11. Feloship Party Sep 2, fri CAFE JUNA, 6 PM. Pls invite BOMBERO ELDERS. Thnx n.."

Somehow, this innocent message strayed into some people who forwarded it to a police officer of the Davao City Police Office, now on high alert against suspected Abu Sayyaf bombers.

Apparently the message was traced to the lawyer who had to do a lot of explaining to ranking police officers who confronted him about. He was lucky he did not look or act anywhere near a possible terrorist or bomber, the cops accepted Atty N's explanation and apology.

Following is his message after the confrontation: "My apology for misuse of word 'bomb.' Alredy xplained to PNP Chief Insptrs. Pepino, Doyo, Anti-Terorist hotline 117 & Mayor Antalan. So sorry. N.."

Case closed. (AMA)
