Mayor backs efforts to rehab watersheds

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte visited Thursday Barangay Carmen in Baguio District to assess the situation of the watershed located there and two other adjacent barangays.

Duterte was accompanied by Carmen barangay captain Alfredo Austral in the inspection of the hill located in the area.

The mayor discussed with Austral measures that could be taken by the barangay government to protect the area from further denudation until rehabilitation efforts of the watershed are completed, according to Executive Assistant IV Christopher Lawrence "Bong" T. Go who accompanied the city's chief executive in the barangay visit.

Go said Carmen is one of the three barangays within the Mt. Tipolog-Tamugan watershed that the Davao City Water District (DCWD) is starting to rehabilitate "to ensure abundant water supply for Davao City in the future."

The DCWD plans to tap the surface water of Panigan and Tamugan Rivers that draw water from the Mt. Tibolog-Tamugan watershed.

Aside from Carmen, barangays Tawan-tawan and Tambobong are also encompassed by the 9,500-hectare watershed.

Mayor Duterte has vowed to support all efforts to rehabilitate watersheds in the city and earlier declared that the city government will not allow the establishment of chemical-dependent plantations in identified watershed and recharge areas.

Go said the DCWD has reportedly programmed the Mt. Tipolog-Tamugan watershed for agro-forestry and massive tree-planting projects. (AMA)
