Rotarians combat blindness
ROTARY, through thousands of its clubs of local civic leaders dedicated to serve their less fortunate fellow citizens, has helped erased polio from the face of the earth.
Now it is doing battle against blindness.
For example, Rotary Club of South Davao president "Espie" Aparis brought in 60,000 of the blue capsules from the Unicef-Philippine Rotary offices and started distributing them immediately in General Santos City, Lanao del Norte and Davao City.
Initiated some years ago during the incumbency of past district governor "Ben" Henson Jr. of District 3790, the capsules have been going into the remote and less privileged areas of the archipelago. A capsule contains 100,000 IU of vitamin A and 20,000 IU of vitamin E and is said to eliminate the risk of blindness for life.
Latest of the thousands of beneficiaries were the children from the parish of San Antonio de Padua, Agdao under Fr. Bong Gonzaga.
Staff workers of the City Health Office joined several Rotary clubs in the vitamin A supplementation, together with rotaractors and volunteers from the diocese.
The participating clubs were Rotary Club of Durian City (Davao) led by President "Pacing" Pascual; RC of Central Davao under President "Erick" Daffon; RC of Davao Gulf under President "Babbet" Naidas and RC of Calinan led by President "Rollie" Padolina. (Norman Jay)
