Madz Et Al choral concert
By Skipojack

IT'S the 35th week of 2005 and it's quite obvious I literally counted to announce in writing that 18 more and it's 2006. So, how relevant is that? The feat just reminds me of the week that came before when thousands of people, if not hundreds of thousands of them, tourists and locals alike flocked downtown streets to be witnesses of the 20th Kadayawan (yes, with stress on the last syllable) fiesta. The occasion offered many people from different walks of life a chance to be awed by the pageantry, the festivity and the street party that are very Davao City.

Not only that, it paved the way for two hundred voices and more uniting schools and universities in the name of music.

I can't forget the chance of being part of the "Mga Tingog sa Kadayawan: A Choral Concert" by the Madz Et Al featuring Joey Ayala (who did a very interesting twist on his hit song Tabi Po), Popong Landero, the Kaliwat Theater Collective and the Himig Singers.

The Grand Concert, which took place at the Davao Centennial Park and organized by the Southern Philippines Foundation for the Arts, Culture & Ecology together with the City Government of Davao highlighted performances by the F. Bangoy National High School Choir, University of Southeastern Philippines Chorale, the UM-PEHM Choir, Holy Cross of Davao Elementary Choir, UIC High School Choir, Ateneo Glee Club, the Davao Boys Choir, Christian Children's Fund Choir, UM Chorale, Philippine Nikkei-Jin Kai School Choir and the Grand Euphonic.

All the choirs comprised the grand tutti, which culminated the concert with their rendition of Greg Canceran's Tayo Ay Dabawenyo and Eudenice Palaruan's Tagumpay Nating Lahat.

It was an enormous bliss that the workshop trainors whom I had a chance to rub elbows with hailed from the popular Philippine Madrigal Singers of UP College of Music.

They are Sharon Abesamis, conductor -- Coro Cantabile and Mr. Arwin Tan, conductor - Novo Concertante. They both led the pack of conductors, which included Elena Gementiza, Dr. Edgar Eleguen, David Cesar Fortuna, Glenn Mark Hallorina, Christopher Lacno, Evelina Dionson and Leid Vincent Cantos. The concert was artistically directed by Arnelio "Doods" Manzano of the CCP. Gracing the presentation were City Tourism Officer Id Acaylar and Ms Margie Moran Floirendo.

(Thanks to Ma'am Leda Jacinto, over-all coordinator for the invitation and Mae Ann Unson. Text me at 0928.712.5618 for your comments and suggestions or email me at skipo_jack@yahoo.com)
