RP eagle sanctuary to be declared in Mati
By Ben O. Tesiorna

A PHILIPPINE eagle sanctuary will soon be declared in Mati, Davao Oriental after three eagles were found nesting in a forested barangay there.

Mati Mayor Francisco G. Rabat said they are now coordinating with the Philippine Eagle Foundation Inc. (Pefi) on the mechanics and requirements for such a declaration.

Rabat's aide, Richard Villacorte, said they plan to formally declare the creation of the eagle sanctuary come October during their celebration of the Sambuokan festival.

"We plan to make the Philippine eagle the symbol of Mati," Villacorte said.

Villacorte said the three eagles were named Cabu (father), Aya (mother) and Cabuaya (eaglet) by the Pefi team after the barangay where they were found nesting.

The sex of the eaglet will only be determined once it reaches full growth.

Villacorte said the declaration of the eagle sanctuary would be within the framework of a municipal ordinance since they wanted the eagle to be protected as soon as possible from harm.

"We cannot wait for our neighboring municipalities and even the provincial and let politics again meddle on our effort to protect and save the eagles from harm.

Kaya we wanted it a municipal declaration para maaksyunan agad namin," Villacorte said.

It was learned that the nest was discovered last March 2005 and within five months time the Municipal
Government has already laid down the plan on how to best protect the endangered specie.

Villacorte said with the declaration of a Philippine eagle sanctuary in Mati, which is estimated to cover an area of about 7,000 hectares, the tourism industry in their municipality would get a boost.

"Kasi it will only be in Mati where you get to see three protected areas lying side by side with a mining site and yet working together for the benefit of the environment and the economy," he added.
