Councilor urges use of coco biodiesel fuel

IN LINE with the government's effort for government agencies to use alternative fuel due to the present energy crisis, Councilor Pilar Braga urged the use of coconut methyl ester (CME), better known as coco biodiesel in all diesel-fueled vehicles of the City Government of Davao.

Coco biodiesel blended with petroleum diesel fuel was shown to reduce harmful emissions into the air such as carbon particulates and greenhouse gases, which will result to improved air quality and minimize air pollution as well as provide more efficient combustion and less engine vibration.

Braga, in her privilege speech during the regular council session Tuesday, said she is battling for the city to use coco biodiesel because it has also proven to boost engine power and improve diesel fuel economy by providing more mileage and bigger savings per liter.

"The City Government has been looking for an alternative fuel to address the energy crisis and the use of coco bio-diesel fuel will establish a long-term and sustainable alternative solution," she said.

Braga pointed out that the use of coco biodiesel will also boost the country's domestic coconut market and stabilize the domestic price of copra and spearhead the growth of the methyl ester industry in the country.

"If this will happen, ultimately the coconut industry will create more job opportunities," she said. On January 18, 2005, the City Council passed Resolution No. 0415-05 requesting the City Mayor through the General Services Office to conduct a comprehensive pilot-testing of the use of CME fuels to all city government vehicles.

On March 9, 2005, the GSO, together with the Department of Energy and a local coco bio-diesel conducted an orientation on the use of CME blended with petroleum diesel fuel at the GSO motor pool in Maa.
