Council to help collect tax, target delinquent payers By Aurea A. Gerundio
DAVAO City Councilor Bonifacio E. Militar Tuesday said his committee intends to step into the city's tax collection drive, adding he plans to write delinquent taxpayers to demand the payment of their obligations as soon as possible.
Militar, who chairs the City Council committee on finance, ways and means, said he has already requested the Business Bureau to provide him within this week the list of delinquent taxpayers in the city.
"I will write them personally in my capacity as chair of the committee on finance. We need to improve collection of taxes," Militar said.
Meanwhile, Militar said the 10-man joint committee, created by the city's executive and legislative departments, will again meet today to continue the review of the proposed Revenue Tax Code of Davao City.
Militar said the main agenda in Wednesday's meeting is to identify items that the executive department did not recommend for taxation.
Militar said the joint committee will discuss and decide whether to delete these more than 50 items in the proposed new tax code that were not recommended by the executive department.
"We need to impose taxes. No government can exist without increasing taxes. But, the taxes should be acceptable," Militar said.
He said the joint committee will make sure that when the government exact taxes from the individuals and companies, the public will not resist.
