Davao netters rule GSC event By Marianne L. Saberon
NOT only one but four Davao City netters captured crowns at the close of the 2005 Prince Nassau Age-Group Tennis Championships in General Santos City.
Juan Paolo Cansino bagged the boys 12-under title, El Santo Santos won the boys 16-under plum while Mark Anthony Alcoseba copped the boys 18-under crown.
Steffi Marie Dizon, meanwhile, topped the girls 18-under event.
In the Cagayan de Oro leg, it was only Santos who took home a championship in his favorite 16-under category despite the presence of stiff contenders from Cebu City.
The diminutive Cansino routed Kurt Gerapusco, 6-2, 6-2, while the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) standout Santos overcame hometown bet Juan Carlo Pantua, 4-6, 7-6, 11-9.
But Santos fell at the hands of fellow RMC player Alcoseba, 4-6, 4-6, in their 18-under finals.
Dizon, from Ateneo de Davao University, pulled off a 6-3, 6-1 win over Rachel Sunglao in the finals.
Rogelio Estanio downed Gerapusco, 6-4, 7-5, for the 10-under unisex championship trophy even as the boys 14-under title went to Ernesto Pantua.
Cindy Gerapusco edged Camille Zapatos, 4-6, 7-5, 16-14, in the girls' 12-under finals of the three-day tournament sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association.
In the girls 16-under, Digos pride Eloisa Collo bested Dizon, 7-6, 2-6, 13-11.
General Santos City Tennis Club president Andy Alemania and Philta regional vice-president Juanito Cansino, Jr. awarded Prince Nassau prizes and trophies to the winners.
