Davao export sales up 11% in six months By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
THE Davao Region posted a total of $355.52 million in export sales during the first semester of this year, higher by 11.1 percent as compared to the same period last year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 reported.
Based on the DTI's performance report for the first six months of this year, the growth in export was due to the increases in sales value of some top export products such as fresh banana, banana chips, fresh pineapple, tuna, and even wood.
Based on the data obtained by the agency from the Bureau of Customs (BoC), export value of fresh banana has leaped by 25 percent, from $279.58 million last year to $349.47 million this year; fresh pineapple has grown by 21 percent, from $19.24 million to $23.32 million; banana chips has registered an increase of 40 percent, the biggest jump so far, from $7.10 million to $9.95 million; wood products, from $2.21 million to $2.9 million, posting an escalation of 31 percent; and tuna, from $3.26 million to $4.02 million, with a noted growth of 23 percent.
DTI 11 planning officer Romeo Castañaga is optimistic that the export performance of the region will continue to soar until the end of the year, especially that a number of measures are being implemented by various agencies just to beef up the economy.
DTI 11, for instance, is developing eight priority commodities in the region, with the help of other line agencies. These commodities include banana, mango, seaweeds, wood, eco-tourism, coconut, mining, and information and communications technology (ICT).
