Sasa Wharf terminal fee to increase 100%

THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is planning to increase within the year the prevailing passenger terminal fee at the Sasa Wharf by 100 percent, from P5.50 to P11.

In a public hearing conducted by PPA 11 last August 8, Fructuoso Capirig, Sasa Wharf terminal supervisor, said the present rate is P5 only, plus a value-added tax (VAT) of 10 percent. But with the proposal, which is expected to be implemented anytime soon, he said the rate will go up at P10 plus 10 percent VAT.

However, the PPA office in the region is still waiting for the approval coming from its head office in Manila, whether to adopt the 100 percent increase or to just implement a lower adjustment rate.

Prior to the hearing, a communication from PPA-Manila has already been received by the PPA office here.

The said communication, signed by Benjamin Cecilio, who is the assistant general manager for operations of the PPA, indicates that all PPA offices in the country that are collecting terminal fees need to increase their existing rates in order to augment the operation and maintenance costs of the 24 units of X-Ray machines and Walk-through Detectors.

"The 24 units of X-Ray machines and Walk-through Detectors will be deployed initially in permanent passenger terminal buildings (PTBs) located in posts with high security risks. Eventually, same equipments will be deployed in other PTBs nationwide," Cecilio said. (JMM)
