Councilman killed in Gulf View By Joy G. Romares
A BARANGAY councilman became the next victim of motorcycle-riding gunmen when he was shot to death while on his way home to Gulf View, a housing subdivision in Barangay Bago Aplaya, Davao City, late Saturday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Romeo Hingcuy, of legal age, father of four, barangay councilman of Barangay Bago Aplaya, and resident of the same place.
Initial investigation showed the shooting happened at around 5 p.m. after Hingcuy attended the session at the barangay hall in Bago Aplaya with village chief Danilo Andoy and other council members.
Hingcuy was onboard his motorcycle when an unidentified man also on a motorcycle appeared and shot him.
He was hit on his head and died instantly. The man sped off after the incident, according to some witnesses.
The responding policemen recovered an empty shell of a caliber .45 pistol at the crime scene.
Meanwhile, barangay chief Andoy, in a radio interview, said that he and a few barangay council members were still at the barangay hall when they received information about the incident.
Andoy said after their session, they had their snacks, and after a few minutes, Hingcuy decided to go home.
It was learned that Hingcuy is a religious leader in their barangay. He is the second elected barangay councilman in their place.
Hingcuy's sister, said her brother has not offended anyone in their place.
Meanwhile, Andoy said a few months ago, Hingcuy asked permission from him to leave from work for three months.
"Atong mga miaging bulan, nag-file siya'g (Hingcuy) leave kay naa daw nangita niya. Sa tinuod lang wala ko'y nakita nga hinungdan sa pagpatay niya (Several months ago, he filed a leave because someone is allegedly looking for him. In fact, I do not have any idea why he was killed)," Andoy said.
The Talomo police could not still establish the motive of the killing. They are conducting further investigation of the incident.
Hingcuy is the 127th victim killed by a motorcycle-riding gunman so far this year.
