Davao bets rule kayak event By Ben Tesiorna
DAVAO City bets ruled the first ever kayaking competition in Monkayo, Compostela Valley, a municipal town down North known for its gold reserves in Diwalwal over anything else.
The kayaking event was held at the Monkayo river just below the Kalaw bridge. Coming out winners in the expert category were Arnel Gabutero, who grabbed P5,000 champions purse.
Placing second was Dennis Bacera, who also won P3,000, while finishing third was was Paulo Qano who went home P2,000 richer.
In the beginners category, Niel Sandalia came out on top to win P3,000. Renato Santos placed second good for P2,000 while Rene Tailot came in third for P1,000.
Bobong Basia and Jimmy Gebero were given consolation prizes for entering the finals.
All of the participants in the beginner's category are all first-timers in kayaking competition. In fact it was their first ride with a kayak.
A clinic was held to teach the neophytes all about kayaking.
"At the start of the competition, entries from Monkay showed how good they are in kayaking. At least they enjoyed and won, too," said Monkayo Mayor Manuel

The sports competition was held in line with the 51st founding anniversary of their municipality.
