Treasury officer nabbed for fake tickets By Aurea A. Gerundio
THE National Bureau of Investigation with the City Treasurer's Office (CTO) arrested a City Hall employee, who is a son of a former councilor, on accusation of issuing fake parking tickets to drivers near a mall along Duterte Street, Friday.
Janel Banzon, 36, plantilla employee at the CTO, was arrested in an entrapment operation, said City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado.
Avisado said Banzon has been under surveillance for two weeks before his arrest following reports about his activity.
With his fake parking tickets, he is able to collect more than the quota allotted him; he keeps the collection from the fake tickets for himself.
Avisado said charges for qualified theft and falsification of public documents was already filed against Banzon in court.
"Other departments are on tight watch also," Avisado said.
CTO chief Rodrigo S. Riola said many complaints have reached his office about one of his employees issuing parking tickets along Duterte Street, thus, the surveillance.
"In fact, walang pangalan na sinabi. Basta doon daw banda sa Duterte Street fake ang parking tickets na binigay. Following this report, we coordinated with the NBI para mag-conduct ng surveillance doon sa area.
After almost two weeks na surveillance, nahuli na nga itong empleyado ng CTO," Riola said.
Riola said it was found out the parking tickets issued by Banzon did not have an official stamp by the CTO at the back portion.
"Ang stamp kasi sa likod ng parking tickets nakalagay ang Oltid, which stands for Other Local Tax Imposition Division. Ang mga tickets issued by Banzon walang stamp kaya nalaman na fake," Riola said.
Riola, however, said they cannot just dismiss Banzon immediately from the job as they have yet to give him the due process.
Sun.Star tried to get the side of Banzon, who is detained at the NBI office, but he refused an interview.
Banzon is the son of former City Councilor Valentino "Tenny" Banzon, a broadcaster who was among the most popular councilors in his time because of his appeal to the "masa".
