Catayas wins
PANABO woodpusher Rodrigo Catayas grabbed 6.5 points to emerge champion in the 4th Mayor Latasa Open Chess Tournament at the Davao del Sur National High School in Digos City over the weekend.
Catayas received a cash prize of P10,000 in the two-day National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned event.
General Santos City National Master (NM) Ric Portogalera took the second spot with six points for the P5,000 award while Panabo's Henry Lopez and Gerald Cavan tied for third and fourth place with identical 5.5 points.
Lopez and Cavan got P2,500 each in the seven-round Swiss System format meet organized by the Sangguniang Kabataan Kagawad Association of Digos.
Davao City bets Werner Priete, candidate NM Jimmy Dano, Ariel Aton and Joselito Alejano along with Lito Laput of Digos City tied in fifth to 10th place with 5.0 apiece. They each received P167.00.
Tagum's Eric Fernandez, General Santos City's Sheider Nebato and Davao's Irwin and Arnel Aton scored 4.5 each to tie in 11th to 14th place.
Davao bet Harrison Maamo, John Ritter Belocura, Mati's Crisanto Lade, Cagayan de Oro NM Levi Mercado, Digos' Neil Abayon, Davao's Samuel Yu, Digos' Mog Conte, Emerson Avila, Bernadito Castro, Irineo Umali and Rodolfo Leal, Jr. trailed behind with 4.0 each. (MLS)
