45 buses won't join Monday strike: transport office

AT LEAST 45 buses from different bus companies will operate on Monday for employees who will still report to their respective work despite the transport strike.

This is according to Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)-11 Administrative Officer Edgar Violan, adding that taxi service companies also vowed to allow their drivers to operate on the same day.

Violan said Saturday that buses will operate during the whole duration of the transport strike, which is said to start at 12 midnight of September 11 until 7 p.m. of September 12.

"May bayad kung sasakay sa bus. Ang libre lang ay doon sa anim na dump trucks provided by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro)", said Violan.

He anticipated an extensive paralysis of transport citing the commitment of three big transport organizations including the Transport of Southern Mindanao for Solidarity, Independence and Nationalism-Pinag-isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Transmission-Piston) of Sammy Lasay, South Eastern Diversified Drivers and Operators Cooperative (Semmdoc) of Maning Duran and Davao City Network of Dodong Petalcorin for this purpose.

In a press statement Saturday, The Transmission-Piston and the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said that all systems are ready for the nationwide transport strike and people's protest this coming Monday.

Various transport groups and multi-sectoral organizations from the provinces of Mati in Davao Oriental, Tagum City in Davao del Norte, Digos City in Davao del Sur, Kidapawan City and Midsayap in North Cotabato, General Santos City and Cotabato City are also expected to participate in the strike.

The strikers are asking not only for the scrapping of the oil deregulation law but also the abolition of the expanded Value-Added Tax (VAT), the rollback of fuel prices, and the wage increase.

The groups have already identified 14 persuasion points or strategic locations where strikers will encourage other motorists to join them.

These are in Toril, Ulas, Matina Crossing, Ma-a, Bankerohan, Rizal Park, Freedom Park, Anda, Jones Circle, Magsaysay Park, Agdao, Buhangin, Panacan, and in front of the Davao Medical Center (DMC). (AAG)
