Asian Tourism Forum security plan firmed up
THE team that handles the security preparation for the upcoming Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) 2006 meets almost weekly to ensure safety and maintain peace and order for the duration of the event.
In an interview, Davao City Police Director Catalino Cuy said police had already formulated the security plan and is undergoing thorough discussion by the security committee.
Cuy pointed out that there has to be an effective and good security scheme considering that Davao City will be host to an international gathering of high profile foreign visitors.
However, he admitted that there is not enough facilities in the airport such as x-ray and if the police could not secure them in Manila they will import the machines.
He also added that in as much as the gathering is tourism in nature they will field police officers in appropriate clothes like "Barong Tagalog" even as he said that they will have contingents to secure the area.
"Also part of the preparation is to train our men how to handle international event like the ATF", Cuy said.
The ATF 2006 will be held in Davao City from January 13 to 22, 2006 where over 3,000 buyers and sellers of the travel industry will converge for an exhibition and a tourism forum.
The tourism forum will be joined by ten tourism ministers from the Asean countries.
It will also be participated by tourism heads from China, Japan and Russia.
ATF 2006 local host Committee Vice Chair Art Boncato said Friday that they had move up to series of trainings for front line service providers.
Boncato said the committee is now into the selection of those who will be assigned as close-in aid of the Ministers.
The process is quite stringent as they need to take examination and other screening process before they will be trained.
Once they qualify, they will be given accreditation.
He also said that the ATF is also accepting volunteers who will be trained as tour guides and in other frontline services. (PIA)
