ComVal eyes 5T hectares for oil palm production
THE province of Compostella Valley is eyeing at least 5,000 hectares for the production of oil palm, the Department of Agriculture (DA) 11 reported.
DA-11 Regional Executive Director Roger Chio said that at present, the agency is on the process of distinguishing potential areas for oil palm plantations.
"Oil palm industry in the region has a very big potential to attain growth. Based on the drafted roadmap of the industry, our local consumption increases by 2.18 percent annually", he said.
In the local market alone, the country already has a shortfall of 40,000 metric tons or 42.5 percent.
Chio said the agency, along with the local government units (LGUs) throughout the region, should fast track the expansion program on oil palm plantations.
"Malapit lang tayo sa Agusan, where one of the country's oil palm processing plants is located. Therefore, the region has a huge window of opportunity na dapat buksan. Ang oil palm kasi 30 years ang productive life nyan so for 30 years walang tigil ang kita mo," he said. (JMM)
