Councilor says staging strike a right of public drivers

TRANSPORT groups have all the reason to strike today because of the rising cost of fuel, said Councilor Jesus Zozobrado, chairman of the Committee on Transportation.

"Participating in strikes is a right of the transport groups. All the government can do is just to see to it that vehicles/buses will be provided for the employees, students and other citizens who needs to go to work," Zozobrado said during a weekly media forum Sunday.

He noted that what is important is for the local government to make the transport strike as peaceful as possible.

Leading groups to join today's transport strike, which is expected to paralyze at least 95 percent of the transportation system in the region, are the Transport of Southern Mindanao for Solidarity, Independence and Nationalism (Transmision)-Pinag-isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytors Nationwide (Piston), Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan).

Also expected to participate in the strike are the Consumer Alert, Coalition of Davaoeños for Truth-Gloria Step down Movement, Health People for Urgent Removal of Gloria Arroyo, Workers and Urban Poor Against Gloria, Broad Youth Alliance for Exit of Gloria in Malacañang, Gabriela, Bayan Muna, Anak Bayan, and others.

Other cities and municipalities in Southern Mindanao like Mati, Davao Oriental, Tagum and Panabo city in Davao del Norte, Digos City, General Santos City, Koronadal City, Kidapawan City under Transport for Integrity, Reform and Solidarity (Tires), Midsayap, North Cotabato and Cotabato City will be joining the transport strike.
