Repeal of oil deregulation law may cause greater harm
REPEALING the oil deregulation law can greatly help suppress the soaring price of oil but this could be a reason for suppliers to stop supplying the country with fuel, said Councilor Jess Zozobrado.
"What would happen if we will not be able to get oil supplies from other countries? This is an issue, which cannot be debated or decided upon by the local government because it's the congress who should decide on this", said Zozobrado in a weekly media forum Sunday.
Zozobrado added that during the forum held at the City Council last Friday, the Transport of Southern Mindanao for Solidarity, Independence and Nationalism (Transmision) did not protest against the impending fare hike on September 14 but they expressed the need to repeal or cancel the oil deregulation law.
He added that the Southern Mindanao Diversified Drivers and Operators Cooperative (Semdocc) on the other hand wanted the fare hike for them to catch up with the rising cost of fuel.
Zozobrado said that commuters would be paying P7 for the first four kilometers and P1.25 for every succeeding kilometer in the latest fare hike. (RCB)
