Serious study ongoing for bike lane proposal

BIKERS in the city streets may soon be a common sight as soon as the proposal for establishing bicycle lanes in Davao City will be approved and implemented, said Councilor Jesus Zozobrado Sunday.

"The resolution for establishing bicycle lanes is already passed to the City Council and it is now being deliberated upon", said Zozobrado, chairman of the City Council Committee on Transportation, in a weekly media forum.

He added that if implemented, there would be no new roads to be constructed but that a portion of the city streets would be painted and be designated as bicycle lanes.

"As to how wide the lanes are, or whether it will be placed at the extreme right portion of the highway or at the middle part of the streets is also being considered" Zozobrado said.

Zozobrado added that if implemented, bikers would have to undergo seminars on road safety and traffic rules and regulations under the Land Transportation Office.

He claimed that aside from helping citizens cut on gasoline use, biking lessens air pollution and is also good for improving the people's health.

City Councilor Leonardo R. Avila III earlier proposed the creation of a technical working group to draft an ordinance establishing bike lanes in selected streets in the city.

The technical group, Avila said, should be composed of representatives from the City Engineers Office, City Administrator's Office, City Planning and Development Office, Traffic Management Center, City Legal Office, cycling groups in the city, the City Council committee on public works and highways chairperson and the proponent of the resolution to establish additional bike lanes.
