Village treasurers to collect residential garbage fees
COLLECTION of residential garbage fee will no longer be the job of collectors from the City Treasurer's Office, but the barangay treasurers.
This was announced Wednesday during the meeting of the 10-man joint executive-legislative committee created to review the proposed revised Tax Code of Davao City.
City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado said the committee agreed to empower barangay treasurers as to save from hiring employees to collect residential garbage fees.
Avisado added the barangay will also benefit from this scheme since it was further agreed that 20 percent of the garbage fee collection will be set aside as barangay funds.
Councilor Bonifacio E. Militar, chair of the City Council committee on finance, ways, and means, said those whose property has a floor area of less than 100 square meters will be charged P20 monthly for the daily garbage collection while those whose property has a floor area of more than 100 square meters will be charged P50 for collection of their garbage.
Militar pointed out that those living below poverty line will be exempted from paying garbage collection fee.
Records from the City Planning and Development Office showed that there are about 240,000 houses in the city according to Militar.
Of the total number of houses, he said, about 25,000 houses were occupied by families living below the poverty line.
City Treasurer Rodrigo S. Riola in earlier reports said they are also planning to give 10 percent discount to those who would pay in advance the total fee for the entire year and 5 percent discount for those who will pay for half of the year. (AAG)
