Biz bureau ups earnings over a 100%

THE renewed team manning the Davao City's Business Bureau reported that business tax earnings in August 2005 increased by 107 percent compared to the same period of last year.

Tax earnings for the month of August this year totaled to P3.6 million compared to last year of the same period, which only amounted to P1.7 million.

Business bureau chief Jhopee Agustin said the figure was contrary to the perception on a dip of taxes to be generated with the strict implementations of some systems introduced.

"I do not know where did the rumor came from that is why we made a thorough recording of the data and this is what we arrived at," Agustin said.

Agustin assumed the post in August this year after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte made a drastic revamp of major offices at city hall including the Business Bureau.

The revamp came about, as there were reports on practices of graft and corruption, which Duterte validated and later decided to implement the changes.

Agustin also said that in August 2005 about P4.6 million were generated from taxes and other fees, which is 62 percent higher than last year of the same period with only P2.8 million.

According to Agustin discipline is needed in adopting new systems.

"We do not allow people to just come as they are given priority numbers so as not to disrupt the flow of transaction," she said.

Agustin said they aim for a one-day processing of business permit applications assuming that all requirements are met and so far they were able to do it.

She added they are still fixing the system with a new program that was installed only last week in order for them to come up with a systematic flow of transaction even as she said that they shorten the process by removing three steps that a client will go through.

Agustin also said that they are looking at computerization as a tool that would fast track transaction and eventually go online for business transaction.
