No tourists committing crimes vs women, kids
THE regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Davao City said Friday that not a single foreign tourist who visited Davao City recently had committed a crime against children and women.
This developed after the DOT regional office in Northern Mindanao released the list of visiting foreigners suspected to be among those who are into trafficking, molesting, and raping Filipino women and children.
"Walang mga ganyang cases so far dito sa city. In first place, we have the Bantay-Turista," Roger Layson, DOT 11 assistant regional director said in a phone interview.
The Bantay-Turista was created in 2002 under the Task Force Davao amid growing threats of terrorism.
"The Bantay-Turista is looking after the welfare of tourists, their safety and enjoyment. In instances where tourists committed crimes against the locals, Bantay-Turista will also intervene. However, in the city, we haven't experienced such case," Layson said.
Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Layson said, is also monitoring abuses committed against children, in close coordination with the city police.
"They (foreign touristss) will have to abide with our laws, like us we respect their laws," Layson said.
According to Layson more than half a million tourists visited the city. Eighty percent are domestic visitors while twenty percent are foreign visitors.
The top five foreign tourists in the city are Japanese, Americans, Koreans, Chinese, and Australians. (BRQ)
