Renewed manhunt vs murder suspect

THE manhunt for murder suspect and Diwalwal miner Nelson "Tata" Sala has been intensified by authorities after the Office of the President ordered for his arrest.

Several months back, Sala was placed in the most wanted list by no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for the murder charge he is facing in court and for his involvement in the illegal mining activity in Diwalwal.

In a letter dated September 22, the Presidential Management Staff (PMS) reportedly requested the Police Regional Office (PRO) 11 for an update on the manhunt against Sala and his brother Edgar who as of this writing remain at large.

For this, the PRO 11 issued an order to all of its posts in the region to arrest the suspects if ever sighted in their areas of responsibility.

"In this regard, you are directed to conduct unrelenting manhunt operations against mentioned suspects (Sala brothers) for immediate arrest in compliance to the presidential directive," read the PRO 11 order.

Aside from the murder charges, Sala is also the prime suspect in the death of the late Monkayo Mayor Joel Brillantes who was shot dead inside the Matina Gallera last June 28, 2003.

Police and military authorities have been hunting Sala for years now but the suspect remain elusive.

Unconfirmed reports reveal that some police and military officials are protecting the suspect, which the latter denied.

But ranking police and military officials in the region denied the said reports.

A P300,000 reward is up for Sala's arrest while another P1 million is being offered by the wife of the late mayor for anybody who could give information that would lead to Sala's arrest or neutralization. (BOT)
