Masons build center in Sarangani Olympics

MALUNGON, Sarangani -- Governor Miguel Dominguez challenged participants to the "Galing Mason Regional Olympics" to show that Mindanao masons excel not only in building structures but also in nation building.

"Let's continue building our country. Leave the politicians in Manila with their endless prattles. Let us instead show everyone that in Mindanao we can build better communities)", Dominguez told 30 mason-participants from all-over Region
XII.

The industry-led trade skills competition was organized by cement-producer Holcim Philippines, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) and the local government units.

The masons, who were building the training center of barangay Talus on September 28-30, are judged according to the proper mixing of cement to its application and finishing. Work safety and ethics is also a premium based on Holcim Philippines' standards.

Vice-Governor Bridget Chiongbian-Huang encouraged the participants to show their best in the competition.

"We have a pool here of the best masons in the region that will help build the training center," Huang said.

"As part of our corporate responsibility, this Galing Mason program is one of our flagship programs. We do not only advertise our product but we try to be of impact to the community by directly helping in putting up structures that the community will benefit from," said Engineer Roger Cerbo of Holcim.

Remedios Flestado, director of Tesda for Sarangani and General Santos City, said the thrust of Tesda is to assist in the development of technical skills among the out-of-school youth so they become competitive here and abroad.

The best mason will receive P7,000 and will represent the region in the national competition. The winner in the national competition will represent the country to the Asean competition. (Sarangani Information Office)
