Cheap rice now available
THE National Food Authority (NFA) said cheaper rice is now available in the far-flung areas of the city.
NFA assistant manager Mon Cangrejo said low cost milled rice is now included in the daily consumption of the city residents particularly in the far-flung areas, unlike before where corn is preferred because of its low price.
"Murang Bugas sa Tindahan sa Barangay" is a program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, which aims to make food available on the table of every Filipino family.
NFA has been supplying "Muranag Bugas" to its accredited outlets even in remote areas in coordination with other government agencies and barangay leaders to address the minimum basic needs of disadvantaged families and communities in their respective barangays.
Barangay Captain Francisco Banate of Barangay Gatungan said Arroyo's "Murang Bugas" program was also made available in Bunawan district through the initiative of Congressman Vincent Garcia.
Banate said Congressman Garcia initiated the Murang Bugas sa Barangay and the "Murang Gamot sa Barangay" to help poor families in his district.
A housewife, Belen Alforque of Barangay Gatungan said "Our lives are better now because the store in our neighborhood is selling cheaper rice. Before we have to travel far just to buy rice".
Alforque said her family used to eat corn before because the price of rice cost more that P20 per kilo and the store is still a distance away. (PIA)
