Mayor admits argument with European envoys over HR

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte admitted having an argument with some European and American officials who visited the city over the issue on human rights violations.

In his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, Duterte admitted having misunderstandings and at times heated argument with some visiting foreign officials when their discussion centers on human rights abuses allegedly perpetrated by people in authority here.

"I was paying for their meals and they went on to castigate me? I stood up and told my special assistant Bong to go let them pay their meal," Duterte narrated.

The mayor said he does not like foreign officials, especially Americans and Europeans, berating him about the human rights abuses here in the city when in fact they (US and Europe) are also number one violators on human rights.

"I told them, don't come here to lecture us on human rights because you are the number one human rights violators. We prefer if you no longer come here," Duterte said.

Duterte had been constantly accused of condoning the series of summary executions against criminals here in the city.

The mayor, however, denied having a hand or being the brain behind the shadowy vigilante group Davao Death Squad. (BOT)
