Date 2005 to surpass last year's P52M sales

THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) aims to surpass last year's sales of the Davao Trade Exhibit (Date) despite the not so robust economic climate.

DCCCII executive director Jayson Magnaye said Date 2004 was able to register income through orders or booking of products from exhibitors by international and local buyers amounting to P52 million. It has also generated some P44 million through product orders in 2003.

Magnaye said they do not expect much on the sale from the three days exhibit but on product bookings.

"It is the product bookings that the entrepreneurs are interested," Magnaye said.

Magnaye said they are expecting some 120 exhibitors some 70 percent of whom are from Davao City and the 30 percent are from Manila and some part of Mindanao.

Magnaye added they have nine US exhibitors that were facilitated by the US Commercial Service through the US Embassy.

"With these foreign goods on exhibit, our Davao producers could have the chance to interact with the exhibitors and at the same time get techniques and tips from them," said Magnaye.

According to Magnaye one of their objectives is also to open up opportunities for them to expand markets and forge partnership.

"While we bring in products from other countries to be showcased here, we are looking at prospects where our Davao products could be marketed maybe in the US," Magnaye said.

Magnaye said they really want a bigger participation from the small and medium entrepreneurs (SME) that is why they lowered down their participation rate to P2,500, unlike in the previous years where charges were between P5,000 to P15,000.

Magnaye also said that the United Kingdom has confirmed participation as among the foreign buyers to join, where their trade and commercial attaché is coming over to Davao City.

"They will promote their industry during the exhibit as they are also interested to look at our hog industry because it is this industry sector that they would like to explore," Magnaye said.

Meanwhile, Magnaye said they are entertaining the possibility of doing the Date 2006 in Manila being the center of trade and commerce of the country.

"Kung minsan kasi ang mga taga Davao pa rin ang tumitingin sa ating product that is why we are towing the idea of bringing it to bigger centers," Magnaye said.

Products on display during the Date 2005 are on real estate, information technology, industrial sector and the larger part of it coming from the SME with varied product lines.

The Date already on its 7th year would run from October 14 to 16, 2005 at the NCCC Mall in Matina, Davao City.
