Education office pegs tuition hikes to inflation
FOR school year 2006-2007, colleges and universities can automatically increase tuition without consulting the students and their parents for as long as this is within the national inflation rate, the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) announced.
The memorandum order issued by Ched that also serves as the guidelines on how to increase school fees starting next year, it stated that all colleges and universities will only be allowed to increase their tuition by as much as the prevailing national inflation rate determined by the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda).
Ched 11 supervising education program specialist Dr. Edward Aquino said this is not like before when increasing tuition fee rates would depend on the rate agreed in consultation with the students and parents.
Aquino said for increases that go beyond the inflation rate, the school would have to consult the parents and students before implementing such.
"And the tuition increase must be posted in conspicuous place and duly approved by Ched," Aquino said.
Meanwhile, Aquino admitted that they have yet to come up with measures to address possibilities of the new memorandum being abused by universities through.
It is feared that universities might constantly increase their tuition fee rates for as long as it is within the level of inflation rate. (BOT)
