Buhangin bags DBL cage title
BUHANGIN District unleashed a searing run in the fourth quarter to defeat Talomo District Sunday night, 93-74, and capture the Duterte Basketball League (DBL) Inter-Political District basketball title at the Almendras gym.
The Buhangin dribblers won the best-of-three series at 2-1 to bag the P80,000 champion's purse. Talomo settled for P60,000.
Buhangin won the series opener but reeled back after losing Game 2 Saturday, 80-88 that sent the championship showdown into a winner-take-all match.
But Buhangin came well prepared in the deciding game, playing solid defense and going on a hot start to finish off Talomo.
Buhangin's big men dominated the rebounding in the last six minutes with Renan Aranaydo, Randy dela Cerna, Cary King Cuerpo, Mark Hernandez and most valuable player Edwil Bohonie controlling the boards.
Talomo District's E. Gutierrez, Philip Jay Orquia, Neil John Dagpin, Eugene Gil Labor and Allan Cuta tried to outsmart the Buhangin cagers but the latter ran faster and jumped higher in the dying minutes.
Bohonie showed to the crowd that he deserved to be the tournament's MVP by even leading the scoring charge in the final canto to stretch the lead, 91-72.
Davao City Second Disrtict Representative Vincent Garcia and DBL chairman Christopher "Bong" Go awarded the trophies and cash prizes to the winners.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, who could not attend the closing ceremony because of a meeting with officials in a far-flung barangay, gave the team members and officials another reason to be joyful when he doubled the cash prizes.
