Army dares group: Help kin of rebel victim

AN ARMY officer challenged human rights group Karapatan Thursday to help the family of the man who was said to have been killed by rebel Kumander Parago in Paquibato District, Davao City on Sunday.

Major Orlando Suarez, executive officer of the Army's 73rd IB, said Karapatan must now offer their help to the family of Modaire Ambong, who was killed by rebels in Sitio New Camotes, Paquibato on October 23.

"This is a cowardly act, a barbaric act of the CPP-NPA. I call on the Karapatan to take the cudgels for Ambong family and their quest for justice if you (Karapatan) are really protector of human rights and not just a front of the communist," Suarez said.

In a press conference at the Task Force Davao headquarters, Ambong's wife, Solita, narrated how she and her husband were invited by two unidentified men Saturday afternoon for a walk.

"Miingon sila sa amoa na mukuyog lang mi nila. Pero wala man mi kaila nila. Pero namugos man gyud sila mao nga napugos na lang pud mi ug kuyog," Solita recalled.

She said after more than four hours of walk, they stopped and rested for the night. The following day, she was ordered by a rebel, who identified himself as Kumander Parago, to leave and go home.

Solita said she did as told leaving her still alive husband with the rebels.

In the afternoon of that same day, she was informed that her husband was found at Sitio New Camotes already dead.

Major Suarez said Ambong was suspected to be a military informant.

Solita, however, denied the allegation, saying her husband is a friend to some police and military personnel who frequent their area in Malabog.

Solita said her husband is just a plain farmer. They have six children. (BOT)
