Estafa raps filed against firm's official

THE City Prosecutor's Office has recommended the filing of charges against a woman who allegedly misappropriated an amount of more than P460,000 from a non-profit educational corporation.

Chief Prosecutor Raul B. Bendigo forwarded the filing of estafa charges before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) against one Adoracion Gumatico, of legal age, resident of Sta. Cruz, Barangay Duterte in Agdao, Davao City.

The accused was the vice president and disbursement officer of Oasis Family Ministries Inc.

The complaint was filed by one Philip Mclean, a New Zealander and director of Oasis Family Ministries, and a resident of Tancontian Street in Agdao.

In his affidavit complaint, Mclean said that the corporation entrusted Gumatico money, goods, and other personal properties owned by the corporation for administration from the year 1997 to 2005, as the vice president and disbursement officer of the corporation.

The corporation, Mclean said, is a non-stock, non-profit educational corporation which was registered with the Security and Exchange Commission.

The corporation provides basic financial assistance to families in terms of educational and healthcare, deriving its main source of income from its contributors.

In March this year, Mclean said he learned about Gumatico withdrawing money from the bank.

An amount of P463,971 from the corporation's fund, Mclean said, had so far been withdrawn without the knowledge of the corporation.

The money, Mclean said, was donated to the corporation by its sponsors for the purchase of a land to be used for building an office and tutorial center for sponsored students for school year 2005-2006.

Maclean added that on March 7, Gumatico wrote a letter addressed to him asking for forgiveness about the incident.

Gumatico, Mclean said, revealed to the letter that she started withdrawing money from the bank starting in July last year.

Madrazo set a bailbond of P40,000 for Gumatico's temporary liberty. (JGR)
