Davao gains semis slot

DEFENDING champion Davao City came out blazing in the second half to rally past Masbate, 5-2, Thursday and reach the semifinals of the adidas U-19 National Football Championships at the Manuel Y. Torres Sports Center in Bago City.

Trailing 1-2 at halftime, the Davao booters sizzled with four goals in the next 45 minutes of play to finally overcome the fighting Masbate side.

Rommel Sali, Danny Molinos, Napoleon Nidea, Renoir Negro and Glen Bulakena scored a goal each to give Davao it second win in as many outings.

The Davao booters, who won the title over Cebu last year, earlier edged Zamboanga, 2-1.

Davao will play host Bacolod in its last elimination round assignment.

Contending for slots in Group B are the National Capital Region, Iligan, Iloilo and Rizal.

The top two teams after the elimination round will advance in the crossover semifinals set on Oct. 30.

The Davao team is coached by Ramonito Carreon, with Jason Mortillero as his assistant.
