Federalists find nothing wrong with Bangsa Moro land

PEOPLE who want a federal form of government for the Philippines welcomed the idea of allocating a portion of Mindanao to become Bangsa Moro Land.

This move is among the compromises to be hatched between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the government to achieve long-lasting peace.

Willie Cabardo, Lihuk Federal Dabaw acting regional chair, said carving a part of Mindanao for the Bangsa Moro people complements their federalist stance.

"It's complementary because we are also suggesting that our Muslim brothers must have their own state," Cabardo said.

He said the plan of the Arroyo administration would not be only good for their cause but for the peace and order in Mindanao as well.

Cabardo said it's about time that predominantly Muslim areas be placed under Islamic rule even if they belong to predominantly Christian provinces.

He said this is what the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao failed to address since not all of Muslim areas were included in the Armm.

Malacañang admitted that indeed there are terms in an agreement between the government and the MILF that would give the Muslim separatist group territories where they could impose taxes and create military and police forces.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo unilaterally decided to carve out the country's southern Mindanao region with areas partitioned as ancestral lands and homelands to be independently governed by the MILF, under the term "Bangsa Moro People".

Malacañang, however, insisted that the agreement is still a draft that has to be firmed up by December or after the Muslims end their holy weeks of Ramadan by November. (BOT)
