E-commerce: An opportunity for farmers to hike income
DEPARTMENT of Science and Technology (DOST) 11 director Madel Moran-Morados said electronic commerce (e-commerce) can be an opportunity for farmers to improve their livelihood and increase their income.
Morados said that just last week, DOST's Mobile IT class project has launched IT project for farmers in Barangay Datu Salumay, Marilog district for farmers to have hands-on class on computers and be able to have access to information technology.
With modern information technologies, giving money or allocation for farmers is now enough anymore. Giving knowledge and opportunities for these farmers to have access to agriculture globally are equally important, Morados said.
E-commerce is the latest business tool via the Internet. It is defined as the buying and selling of goods, services and information between two or more trading parties over an electronic medium, also said Mobile IT class project manager Dr. Edmundo Prantilla.
The DOST Mobile IT class project is in consonance with the President's agenda in providing modern techniques to farmers and fishermen aimed at increasing their daily income which eventually will generate more jobs and opportunities.
The e-commerce compels the government to complete computerization program and bring this modern technology to far-flung and remotest areas in various barangays.
"We have to accelerate our efforts to make use of information and technology to the benefit of our farmers," Dr. Prantilla said.
Among the challenges that government is facing is to accelerate Internet usage to far-flung areas to help the poor sector and alleviate poverty.
The government is developing policies to ensure greater and cheaper access to information technology for the poor, said Dr. Prantilla.
The Mobile IT class project launched in Marilog district aims to help farmers market their produce and for them to get the best price on market places and be able to have first hand information on the latest information on agriculture.
