Militants see 5% public transport paralysis By Ben O. Tesiorna
THE transport strike called by the Southeastern Mindanao Diversified Drivers and Operators Cooperative (Semddoc) is on but militants predict this would not cause much inconvenience to the commuting public.
Juland Suazo of Bayan said that only 5 percent of public transport is expected to join the Monday strike.
Suazo said the reason for non-participation of the majority of the transport sector is because there was no proper consultation made by Semddoc.
"Although we recognize the legitimacy of the demands of the strike spearheaded by Semddoc, a lot of transport groups and grassroots organizations were not consulted. Hence, categorically we will not join the strike. If there would be a strike it should be well-prepared and transport groups are consulted in order to gain maximum participation of the public," Suazo said.
"As reported, 95 percent of transport groups in Davao and other provinces will not join. They will ply their routes. The militant Transport in Mindanao for Solidarity, Independence and Nationalism and network of Petalcorin, the two big transport groups of the city would not be joining," added Suazo.
Meanwhile, the City Government of Davao would be fielding at least 30 buses with two police escorts each in major routes Monday as several public transportation vehicles are expected to join the nationwide transport strike.
