Davao region sends biggest number of OFWs to Japan
AMONG the regions in Mindanao, Davao Region or Southern Mindanao has contributed a large number of overseas Filipino workers in Japan, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said.
Based on the 2002 Survey of OFWs conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), NSCB noted that 67 percent of the 15,000 Mindanao OFWs in Japan were from Davao Region.
The Japanese market absorbed in 2002 slightly more than one-third or 37 percent of the registered 27,000 Southern Mindanao residents who went out of the country to seek jobs abroad.
In a continental and country distribution of workers from Southern Mindanao, Asia, with Japan at the lead, absorbed 77.8 percent of them while 3.7 percent were in North and South America.
On the other hand, NSCB noted that about 60 percent of these workers were females, majority of whom were within the age range of 25 to 29 years old.
NSCB said female OFWs from Southern Mindanao consistently outnumbered male OFWs in continents and countries of destination.
The mass of women leaving home, seeking greener pasture were also noted in all other regions in Mindanao.
Of the 135,000 Mindanao OFWs registered in 2002, 65.2 percent were females while only 34.8 percent were males.
