RP eyes 6 golds
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

PHILIPPINE Amateur Swimming Association (Pasa) president Mark Joseph is pinning its hopes on Davao City divers and national swimmers to reach his six gold medal target in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on November 27 to December 5.

Joseph, in a brief phone interview with Sun.Star Davao Tuesday, said: "We aim to surpass the four golds output of our entire aquatics team including the water polo team in the Vietnam SEA Games. We are gunning for six golds."

He said although the six golds target may come from the tankers and divers, the water polo team may also pull off a surprise and struck for a gold.

Davao Olympians Sheila Mae Perez and Zardo Domenios will banner the country's diving squad along with twin gold Vietnam SEA Games medalist Ryan Fabriga. Joining them in the cast are Zardo's sister, Ceseil, Jaime Asok and Niño Carog.

"The RP aquatics team will leave for Laguna this week to train at the playing venue--the Trace Computer College. It will be good for our athletes to get the feel of the pool ahead of the other contingents," the Pasa chief added.

He said the diving, swimming, and water polo teams are still in Manila after their three-month training stint in China.

"Everything is okay. Our athletes are ready," Joseph said.

Other events in the biennial sports meet will be held in Metro Manila, Bacolod, Cebu, Subic, Angeles City and Tagaytay.
