Task force to lumad rebels: Don't allow murder of chiefs

TASK Force Davao (TFD) chief, Colonel Eduardo del Rosario, appealed on Thursday to all lumads (tribesmen) who are members of the New People's Army not to allow the murder of their tribal leaders.

In Thursday's AFP-PNP Press Corps 11 conference at TFD headquarters, del Rosario called on all lumad rebels not to allow their rebel commanders, who are non-lumads, to order the murder of tribal chieftains in their area.

Del Rosario made the appeal after rebels under Kumander Parago murdered Datu Manuel Butig last November 8. Butig was abducted by the rebels around 5 p.m. at Sitio Kristorey in Barangay Paradise Embak.

His body was later found around 8:30 p.m. at Sitio Manipis in Barangay Paquibato Proper with more than 30 gunshot wounds in his body.

"Do not allow your fellow lumads to be killed by your NPA commanders because that is the highest form of betrayal for lumads. Otherwise you will wake up one day without any lumad leaders and themselves become victims as well," the colonel said.

Del Rosario said many lumads in Paquibato are now requesting the military to be allowed to declare a pangayao against the NPA rebels.

Del Rosario said they however did not allow this since it would cause more senseless deaths.

He said they had been conducting military operation in Paquibato for more than a week now hoping that they would get the elusive Parago soon. (BOT)
