DTI assists LGUs thru trade program

AFTER the "One Town, One Product (Otop)" program was launched in Davao region this year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has come up with series of steps that aided the municipalities in coming up with their specific industry.

According to DTI 11 Regional Director Merly Cruz, the receptiveness of the towns to promote the Otop program was reinforced with the commitment of support by concerned National Government agencies by forging a memorandum of agreement in support to small and medium enterprises development (SMED) through the program.

She cited in particular the commitment of the Technical Educational Schools Development Authority (Tesda) and the Department of Interior and Local Government in human resource development and localization of the SMED plan.

Cruz also said that at the regional level they had identified as regional Otop the production of banana chips for Southern Mindanao.

Part of the initiative was the product development conducted by Niche Markets Inc. where 12 banana chips variants were developed, five for school children and seven for institutional markets.

In Davao del Norte, the Otop program was formally launched during the SMED Week celebration in July highlighted with an exhibit showcasing the Otop products of each city and municipality.

Davao Oriental on the other had conducted various Otop skills trainings namely banana chips processing, mango production (flower induction techniques, pest and diseases prevention and control, and abaca culture management).

There was also a market march for San Isidro mango growers with Davao City buyer for the supply of fresh mango with an initial sales generated at P100,000.

The Davao del Sur Otop program, meanwhile, came up with nine market linkages were some P1.5 million sales were generated on mango production.

In coordination with the Department of Science and Technology, a product development on packaging and labeling of Magrice and mango conducted for the municipalities of Magsaysay and Matanao, Otop was an adaptation of Japan's successful One Village One Product in Oita Prefecture Japan established in 1979.

The Otop has been established in Thailand, Vietnam, Malawi, Cambodia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

In the Philippines, Otop was launched to entrepreneurship and create jobs.

It is a convergence of services from local government units, national government agencies and the private sector.

This includes, business counseling, skills and entrepreneurial training, product design and development, appropriate technologies and marketing.
