City plans home-based day care service
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

THE Davao City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) would expand its day care service programs to homes, according to CSSDO chief Marilyn Agonia Wednesday.

Agonia said that this developed after the death of 4 children in two separate fire incidents in the city.

The children were allegedly left alone at home because their mothers had to work and help their husbands earn a living.

Agonia said Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ordered CSSDO to create drop-in centers in different districts in the city, especially in the squatter areas.

"We started Friday sa among orientation on the early childhood care and development program with the identified barangay captains and volunteers," Agonia said.

There are 448 day care centers in the city catering to 24,000 children ages 3-5.

"Pero kulang gihapon atong pag cater sa mao nga serbisyo kay daghan man ang population sa 3-5 years old children," she said.

"So we encourage volunteer mothers who will take care of the children and i-volunteer iyahang respective homes, pati iyang balay na dad-un didto ang mga bata," Agonia said.

The volunteer mother would take care of a limited number of children, ages 0-5 years old.

"About 10 children para in the meantime na wala ang mother, the volunteer mother na dili kaayo busy, maghatag iyang panahon to take care of the children," she said.

The home-based day care service, Agonia said, would help avoid incidents brought by the inadequacy of mothers to attend to their children at home because they also have to earn a living.

She added that the service would make sure that the child is safe at home and at the same time being taken cared of.

"The children could also take positive values while naa siya sa volunteer mother na nag take care sa iya," Agonia said.

As of the moment, the CSSDO has 50 volunteer mothers to do the home-based day care center. They are being trained for capability building.

Village chiefs are also trained so that they would be informed of the early childhood care and development program and ensure the safety and the protection of the rights of children in every barangay.

The volunteer mothers are from Barangay 23-D, Bunawan, Toril, and Agdao.

All districts of the city is encouraged to expand the home-based day care service especially to squatter and thickly populated areas, Agonia added. (BRQ)
