Dimakiling gets chance By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
A GREAT showing by FIDE Master Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City in the 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games might earn him an International Master (IM) status en route to being a Grand Master (GM).
This, according to National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) regional director Ronnie Tabudlong, is not a far-fetched possibility.
"Oliver has always been a consistent player. He just needs to have more international exposure to become an IM or GM. Who knows, he will yet soon become Davao's first-ever GM," he said in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
Dimakiling, who had a brief stint with the University of Mindanao (UM) before joining the De La Salle University chess varsity team, is entered in the standard chess event along with IMs Ronald Dableo and Jayson Gonzales.
GMs Eugene Torre and Joey Antonio, and IM Mark Paragua will don the country's colors in the rapid chess category.
The NCFP regional chief said chessers from Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam are the ones the Filipinos are looking out for, adding, "they have noted GMs who are really very good ones."
The RP chess team is eyeing to surpass its six gold medal output in the Vietnam SEA Games in 2003.
Tabudlong will leave on November 24 to assist the technical committee of the SEA Games chess competition to be held at the Tagaytay City Convention Center.
