Ultramarathon gets underway

AN EXCITING 50-kilometer 1st International Philippine Ultramarathon, dubbed "North Face Mt. Apo Trail," will get underway Saturday.

Adventure-loving enthusiasts will dare dirt roads and challenging trails to get to the country's highest peak.

The race features the men's and women's divisions where the men champion will take home a cash prize of P20,000 and other merchandise. The runner-up will get P7,500 while the third placer will settle for P3,500.

In the distaff side, the titlist will receive P15,000 while the next two finishers will get P7,500 and P3,500, respectively.

An ultramarathon is one which measures more than the standard marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers.

Some members of the Philippine team that is set to conquer the Mt. Everest in 2007 are also expected to take the Mt. Apo challenge in preparation for their ultimate climb. (MLSA)
