Dimakiling II tops chessfest By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
UNIVERSITY of Mindanao (UM) woodpusher Chito Dimakiling II edged multi-titled teammate Brene Parreño via the tiebreak to rule the 2005 3rd DCDC-NCFP Monthly Youth Active Chess Championship at the Gaisano Mall of Davao Sunday.
Both players scored identical 4.5 points in the five-round Swiss System format chessfest but Dimakiling had 18 tiebreaks over Parreño's 17.5.
Michael Boris Diez placed third after leading other 4.0 scorers in tiebreaks. He got 16 tiebreaks besting John Ritter Belocura (15.5), Danilo Engay Jr. (14.5), John Carl Aunso (12.5) and Franco Romeo Demiar (12).
Finishing behind were F. Bangoy National High School's Arturo Ravelo III and Ricardo Arce who grabbed 3 with 5 points each and Adrian Dimakiling of Sta. Ana National High School.
The winners received cash prizes, trophies and medals in the one-day event sponsored by the Davao City Sports Council, Inc. and Philippine Sports Commission.
The National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned it.
A total of 44 players competed in the meet. A similar event will be staged next month.
