City gov't urges rebels to surrender
DAVAO City Councilor Emmanuel Galicia reiterated the government's call for all rebels to return to the folds of the law and live normal lives with their families and loved ones.
"Yuletide season is fast approaching. We are urging the rebels who are still out in the mountains to be in the mainstream of our society and be with their family," he said.
Galicia said it was no less than Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who is also asking the New People's Army (NPA) members to return to the folds of the law.
The government has assured rebels who would go back to the mainstream society of substantial financial and livelihood assistance.
The administration has allocated funds for emergency assistance in terms of cash, livelihood, and technical assistance by the Philippine National Police and other concerned agencies.
During the incumbency of former President Fidel V. Ramos, the rebel assistance was dubbed as the "National Unification program" and later on the National Program for Reconciliation and Development.
Duterte has encouraged to intensify reconciliation, reintegration, and to help rebel-returnees through livelihood programs.
"It is best for all rebels fighting against the government to reconcile with the administration instead of continuously running away from military operations," he said.
The National Democratic Front-Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army has been regarded by the Armed Forces of the Philippines as a security threat to the government. (PIA)
